Walk through an ordinary day on the plan.

Walk through a normal day on the plan. Test arrival, groceries, cooking, dining, bathing, laundry, sleeping, storage, cleaning, and access to mechanical equipment.

Place real furniture, door swings, clear walking paths, and storage on the plan. A room label does not prove the room will be comfortable.

Daylight is useful only when privacy still works.

Study daylight and privacy together. Window size and placement affect furniture, neighboring views, heat, ventilation, and the relationship between the ADU and main house.

Look from the main house and neighboring windows as well as from inside the ADU. A large window can improve one room while taking privacy from another.

Choose products the drawing can identify.

Choose materials with installation and maintenance in mind. Exterior exposure, wet areas, flooring transitions, cabinetry dimensions, lighting, and trim details should be coordinated with the actual products.

Record manufacturer, model, size, finish, installation needs, and an approved substitute process for the items that shape the finished work.

Give the entrance and yard enough room.

Connect the architecture to the yard. Entries, paths, drainage, equipment, refuse storage, planting, fences, and private outdoor space all compete for limited area on some Costa Mesa lots.

Turn inspiration into a written selection.

Document selected products and unresolved allowances. A reference image communicates direction, but the drawings and written specifications control what the contractor is expected to install.
